Update for Developing Your Personal Management Development Plan
The Personal Management Development Plan provides a vehicle for each student to shape their insights
into their preparedness for advancing in the world of management. Combined with the Assessments
done throughout the course in MindTap, the assignment represents 15% of each student’s grade in BUS
160, a major portion.
Shown below is a listing of all of the assessments for each chapter, plus some others from the text and
recommended online. Student scoring the highest grades on their report, do all of the assessments and
exercises and write a great report that ties it all together and creates a holistic picture of the student’s
thinking on their management future.
The final report is to be uploaded to Canvas and a hard copy turned into class on the due date.

The length of the report may vary. However, the average report should be approximately 10 pages of double spaced text with a 11 or 12-point font.
Students have a lot of freedom in formatting their report, but the below are suggestions derived from reading a large number of student reports and in seeing the key areas that make for a great report and top grade.
Cover Page – The best reports have a cover page that says something about the author. Having a picture of the student on the cover is a great way to showcase your work. You can also add some insightful graphics or a quotation that help to capture YOU.
Table of Contents – The table of contents should reflect the organization of the report and tell the reader what is to follow. Use of the tool in Microsoft Word and other word processing programs will produce a professional looking table of contents.
Introduction – This short section should convey to the reader what the report is about.
Personal Background – This section sets the stage for the report and the student’s reflective thinking by taking a look at their past. You can discuss all that provides a picture of who you are. This can include where you grew up, family and friends, school, hobbies, hopes and dreams, things you have always been at and the weaknesses you have.
My Career Objectives – Next discuss where you want your life to go in terms of future career aspirations. Many students are candidly not sure and are still in the exploration phase. That is fine.
Where I See My Management Strengths – In terms of where you see yourself now, what do you see as basic managerial strengths? For instance, you may be very good with people or have an analytical mind, or may be good at planning.

Where I See My Management Weaknesses – We all have weaknesses and what are yours in terms of managing people?
New Insights Gained from the Assessments – This is the part of the report where you begin to really look forward in terms of what you learned from the assessments completed. The best reports will highlight the specific exercise and what was a big surprise or important confirmation.
Management Areas Where I Need to Improve – Now having looked back at your life and most importantly gained new insights from the assessments and exercises conducted, what do you see as the improvement actions that are appropriate in developing a more meaningful management future?
Personal Actions I Plan to Take to Improve My Management Capabilities – Finally, what are the concrete actions you plan to take to forge new management capabilities for the future? There are a host of possibilities, e.g. applying for an internship, joining Toastmasters, taking certain elective courses, finding a mentor, and on and on.
Summary and Conclusions – This final section wraps up your report and reflects on what you have just achieved in developing your Personal Management Development Plan.
Appendix – The Appendix should list all exercises conducted with a brief summary of the results. This summary discussion is most important to your report. It should reflect some detail on each exercise conducted and what it means. Most students can achieve a very meaningful summary in 1 to 2 inches of single-spaced text. Also to be included in the Appendix is a list of sources if any outside research was conducted. Also if an interview was conducted, you can include such information as to the questions asked and responses.
Grades for this portion of the course are often quite high. The reason is that the subject is the most interesting and important to most students as it is about YOU. The key to getting a high grade on the assignment is to start early and do the exercises and assessments along with reading and studying each chapter. Below is the rubric that is used for grading each student’s PMDP report.

A=Superior/Exceeds Expectations; B=Very Good/Meets Expectations; C=Average/Could Improve D/F=Deficient
1. The report was well-organized with strong visual appeal (e.g. attractive cover, proper table of contents, good formatting, headings, proper use of paragraphs, easy to follow, proper appendix).
2. A maximum number of Self-Assessment exercises were completed, 44 in all, with meaningful summaries and reflections on the results.
3. The report reflected an engaging discussion of:
a. Student’s background
b. New insights gained from the Assessment conducted, and these were integrated into a thoughtful discussion.
c. A forward looking plan for the future in terms of avenues for self-improvement of management capabilities was provided.
4. The writing was interesting, engaging, professional and grammatically correct (and flowed well from section to section.)
5. If any research was conducted, e.g. interviewing techniques or career choices, these are cited per the APA style.
