You are to carefully choose one area of society that sport is assumed to positively contribute to or one area of sport that is assumed to have a positive influence on our lives or on society. You are to provide a critical analysis of this, highlighting both sides (positive and negative) of the argument. Your subject area must be analyzed through a socio-cultural lens, and incorporate key terms/concepts/theories from sport sociology and relevant academic sources (e.g. sport sociology journal articles and books). It is recommended that students structure their report in the following way: • Introduction (written in full sentences): In one or two paragraphs, provide a rationale for your choice, and provide some evidence that sport is considered to positively impact/influence this area of society/area of our lives. • Key points (written as bullet points/point form): Outline both sides of the argument (i.e. that sport does and does not contribute positively to this area of society, or that this aspect of sport does and doesnot have a positive influence on our lives or on society). You are urged to think carefully about these points. Read critical reviews and articles, and express your arguments on both sides with the support of evidence and examples. • Short summary and conclusion (written in full sentences): In one or two paragraphs, write a summary of the key points, weighing them up against each other, and come to a conclusion on one side or the other. You are urged to think carefully before making a conclusion (I am marking you on your critical thinking skills!), and also to support whatever decision you make with as much evidence as possible.
