Topic selection: Advocacy for an increase in mental health funding for College Students. (6 pages) 6 references Assume that you are working for the American nurses association and they have asked you to develop for them an advocacy plan on the need for an increase in mental health funding for college students. For this assignment you will create a plan which should include all the components listed below. For the section on evaluation you will describe how you will evaluate the effectiveness of your strategies. Components of the Advocacy Plan: 1. Define the Issue – this is where you discuss what your issue is, why it is important, and what should be changed. 2. Gather the facts/background/research about the issue – is this a law, regulation, or rule that is outdated or redundant, or just is no longer necessary? Elaborate on these changes. 3. Identify the desired outcomes – are you looking to have new legislation introduced? Are your trying to defeat proposed legislation? Or are you trying to change a law, regulations, or guideline. Are you advocating for more funding or greater visibility? 4. Identify who the decision-makers are to target – local, state or federal government officials 5. Develop a list of who your allies/supporters are and who your opponents are – it is also important to know what side everyone is on. 6. Identify the main points of your issue and what the main points are from your opponents – knowing your opponents messages is good to help frame your messages and/or to be prepared with counter arguments. 7. Develop an activity calendar that will identify the activities and timeline to undertake to achieve your goals. This may include specific communications, a lobbying day, individual meetings with legislators, or activities to engage the public, among others. 8. Document and evaluate the results of what worked and what didn’t to impact future efforts – the plan should continually change based on what works and what doesn’t. 9. Modify and update the plan on an annual basis
