How to reference in the PQA

We prefer you to use a modified style of referencing for this sort of assessment task. Please, use in-text referencing in brackets. We do not require you to research beyond the text (Commercial Applications of Company Law) and the legislation (Corporations Act 2001 (Cth)). Your main points of reference will be:

  • A relevant section of the Act. An abbreviated reference in the following format is acceptable: s181CA or s180(1)CA. Please, note that you do not need to set out the full text of any section of the Corporations Act in your answer. This will use up your available word count.
  • A relevant case. You only need to refer to the case and its year followed by its paragraph location in the text. For example – Aberdeen Railway Co v Blaikie Bros (1854) CACL 14-160. The name of the case should be italicised. If you have referenced the case once you may refer to it again in the body of your text in an abbreviated format without fully referencing its location. E.g. “… in the Aberdeen Railway case, the director placed himself in a position where his duties to both businesses were in conflict.”
  • A quote from the textbook. If it is a direct quote, e.g., “A corporate opportunity is a business opportunity that the company is considering or one in which the company might reasonably be expected to be interested, given its current line of business” (CACL 14-160), you should use inverted commas (“…”) and italics. Likewise, your reference in brackets should be to the paragraph and page location in the textbook. If you are using an earlier edition of the text and a direct quote, you should put the year before “CACL” (e.g. 2013CACL 14-160 p.291). If you are making an indirect quote, i.e. using an idea from the text but expressed in your own words, reference the paragraph location in the text e.g. CACL 14-180 (you do not need to put the year of your text edition or the page number).
